Thursday, January 15—Ellis Island with The Bowery Boys. No place in the U.S. symbolizes the American experience more than this 27-acre island in New York Harbor. From 1892-1924, Ellis Island was the busiest immigration station in the U.S., processing some 12 million immigrants from around the world as they began their new lives in the United States. This presentation is led by licensed NYC Tour Guide Michael Morgenthal, whose great-grandparents immigrated through Ellis Island from the Ukraine in 1905. The lecture will explore what immigration was like before the opening of Ellis Island, why the Federal Government decided to open immigration stations, and what this change meant. We will walk in the footsteps of the immigrants as they took the harrowing first steps toward their new lives. We’ll also discuss what criteria were used to admit or deny entry and Ellis Island is still relevant today.
Thursday, January 22—Judy Garland: A Star for the Ages. Judy Garland is known as one of the most popular singers of her day. From her early days as a child actress to becoming an iconic star, Garland remains a beloved talent to this day. Join film historian Annette Bochenek for a presentation about Garland’s early years in Minnesota, her time in Hollywood, and her legacy today.
